Vestibular Rehabilitation (Vertigo)

Overview

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized physiotherapy approach for treating dizziness (vertigo), unsteadiness and the sensation of falling that develop due to impairment of the balance organ in the inner ear (the vestibular system). Our balance system is maintained by the harmonious functioning of the inner ear, the eyes and the body's sense of position. Disruption of this harmony leads to dizziness.

One of the most common causes is BPPV (benign positional vertigo), which occurs when the crystals in the inner ear become displaced. In addition, vestibular neuritis, loss of balance and dizziness of central origin are also evaluated within this scope. With proper assessment and a personalized program, significant relief can be achieved in many cases.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness (vertigo) — a sensation that the surroundings or oneself is spinning.
  • Unsteadiness — feeling as if about to fall, especially while standing and walking.
  • Spinning triggered by head movements — symptoms that increase when lying down in bed, rolling over or looking up.
  • Nausea and a feeling of vomiting.
  • Blurred vision or difficulty focusing.
  • Insecurity while walking and fear of falling.

Rehabilitation Approach

The basis of vestibular rehabilitation lies in the brain's ability to reorganize (adapt) the balance system. In BPPV-related conditions, specific repositioning maneuvers are applied to move the displaced crystals into the correct position. In addition, the brain is retrained through eye-head coordination, balance and habituation exercises. Planning the program on a personalized basis and applying it regularly largely determines the outcome.

What We Do

First, our physician performs a detailed assessment to understand the source of the dizziness; examining when and with which movements the complaint arises, along with balance and eye movements, and determines the appropriate treatment path. What matters to us is correctly identifying the true cause of the complaint; because there is no disease, there is a patient.

If the assessment points to BPPV, we carefully and safely apply personalized repositioning maneuvers aimed at moving the crystals in the inner ear into the correct position. In many cases these maneuvers can provide significant relief.

Then our specialist physiotherapists prepare a personalized vestibular exercise program. Through eye-head coordination, balance and habituation exercises, we aim to help the brain readapt to the balance system. We dose the exercises according to the person's tolerance and safeguard against falls.

So that you can continue the process at home, we arrange a personalized home program and inform you about points to be mindful of in daily life. Through regular follow-up and check-ups we update the program, aiming to reduce dizziness and restore balanced, safe movement with a holistic and patient approach.

Don't postpone your pain.

With the right assessment and a personalised programme, the step you take today can change your tomorrow.
