What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a special massage method based on very light and rhythmic hand movements, applied to support the working of the lymphatic system, which is responsible for the body's immune and fluid balance. Unlike classic massage, the essence here is not deep pressure but soft, directed touches applied to the surface of the skin. The aim is to help direct the lymph fluid that has accumulated in the tissues toward the appropriate channels.
When Is It Used?
- Edema and swelling — in swelling due to fluid accumulation in the tissues.
- Postoperative period — in suitable cases, to support circulation.
- Chronic fatigue and a feeling of heaviness — especially in a feeling of fullness in the legs.
- Recovery after injury — as support in reducing regional edema.
Note: It is not applied in certain conditions such as active infection or heart failure; for this reason, physician evaluation is essential beforehand.
How Is It Applied?
The application is carried out with rhythmic movements of light stretching and releasing of the skin, taking into account the flow direction of the lymphatic system. It usually begins from the regions closer to the center of the body, and the aim is to direct the fluid in the tissue toward the free channels. The pressure is quite light; the patient does not feel discomfort.
Benefits
- Helps reduce swelling due to fluid accumulation in the tissues.
- Supports regional circulation and a feeling of relief.
- Contributes to reducing the feeling of heaviness and tension.
What We Do
We apply manual lymphatic drainage, in cases we deem appropriate, as a complementary part of our holistic treatment. First, our physician evaluates the person, decides whether the application is appropriate and draws up the treatment protocol. Then our specialist physiotherapists carry out the drainage application with the correct technique, according to the person's needs. Together with our other manual methods and our personalized exercise program, we aim for a relaxed and balanced body.
