Why Is Assessment Important?
Every sound treatment begins with a correct assessment. The same complaint can arise from completely different causes in different people. For this reason, we never begin treatment directly; first, we try to understand the true source of your problem. Our principle is clear: there is no disease, there is a patient.
The Physiotherapy Assessment Appointment is the first step in which we get to know you and your complaint holistically and chart the treatment road map together. You can come to this appointment with any question you have about where your pain is coming from.
What Happens at the Appointment?
At your assessment appointment, our physician first has a detailed conversation with you. They listen to when your complaint began, how it has progressed, your daily life and working conditions, and any past conditions. This history is one of the most important parts of the diagnosis; because the story of the pain often reveals its source.
- Detailed history — the onset and course of the complaint and its effect on daily life.
- Physical examination — assessment of posture, range of motion, muscle strength, reflexes and flexibility.
- Special tests — clinical tests aimed at distinguishing the source of the complaint.
- Interpretation of imaging — evaluation of any MRI, CT or X-ray findings together with the examination.
Imaging Alone Is Not Enough
Here we especially want to emphasize a situation we encounter frequently: a finding seen on imaging methods does not necessarily mean that your complaint originates from that finding. For example, a hernia may be seen on an MRI; however, the true source of your pain may be something entirely different. For this reason, the physical examination is essential for us. Imaging is a valuable aid that supports the examination findings; it is not a diagnostic tool on its own.
After the Assessment
When the assessment is complete, our physician clearly explains your diagnosis and the likely source of your complaint. Then a treatment protocol entirely tailored to you is drawn up. We always regard surgery as a last resort and first evaluate conservative (non-surgical) methods.
This appointment is the first step you take to understand what you are experiencing and to begin healing the right way. It is a meeting where you can ask your questions without hesitation, where we listen to you and plan the process together. We would be pleased to welcome you among us.
