Overview
Facial paralysis (facial palsy) is the loss of movement or weakness in one half of the face that occurs when the facial nerve, which drives the facial muscles of expression, is affected. Its most common form is Bell's palsy, whose cause is not fully known and which usually begins suddenly. In addition, it may develop due to infections, trauma and other neurological causes.
Facial palsy has a favorable course in most cases and can show considerable recovery with a proper program. A personalized physiotherapy and exercise program started in the early period supports the healing process of the facial nerve and the renewed working of the facial muscles.
Symptoms
- Loss of movement in one half of the face — the facial muscles on that side not working.
- Drooping at the corner of the mouth — asymmetry when smiling and speaking.
- Inability to fully close the eye — risk of dry eye and irritation.
- Difficulty wrinkling the forehead — weakness in eyebrow movements.
- Difficulty eating and drinking — liquid or food escaping from that side.
- Impaired facial expression and symmetry.
Rehabilitation Approach
Facial palsy rehabilitation is planned with a personalized approach aimed at correctly reactivating the muscles of expression. With specific exercises for the facial muscles, gentle massage and appropriate stimulation techniques, the healing process of the nerve is supported, and the aim is to regain facial symmetry and correct expressive movements. A well-dosed, regular program started in the early period is known to positively influence recovery in many cases.
What We Do
First, our physician evaluates the degree to which the facial nerve is affected, the condition of the muscles of expression and facial symmetry in detail, and determines the appropriate treatment program. What matters to us is not the diagnosis but the person in front of us; because there is no disease, there is a patient.
Our specialist physiotherapists prepare a fully personalized program. Through specific exercises for the facial muscles, we aim to correctly reteach movements such as raising the eyebrows, closing the eye and smiling. When needed, we support the working of the muscles with gentle facial massage and appropriate stimulation techniques.
We dose the exercises according to the person's level of recovery; avoiding excessive and incorrect strain, we ensure the balanced working of the facial muscles. Our goal is to gradually restore facial symmetry and correct expressive movements.
So that you can continue the process at home, we arrange a personalized home program and teach facial exercises, eye care and points to be mindful of. Through regular follow-up and check-ups we update the program according to the recovery process, aiming to restore your facial function and self-confidence with a patient and holistic approach.
