Rehabilitation After Knee Replacement

Overview

A knee replacement (knee arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure in which a severely worn and pain-producing knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint surface. Even if the surgery goes well, a planned rehabilitation process is required afterward so that the knee can be used again without pain and safely.

Postoperative rehabilitation is carried out to establish harmony with the prosthesis, restore range of motion, re-strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee and leg, and safely return the person to daily life, walking, and function. This process is a phase at least as decisive as the surgery itself.

Rehabilitation Process

Rehabilitation progresses gradually, in full compliance with the protocol and healing timeline set by your surgeon. At each stage, we do not move on to the next step until the previous one has been safely completed.

  • Early period — control of swelling and pain, preserving the knee's range of motion within safe limits, and gentle activation exercises.
  • Intermediate period — gradually increasing range of motion, correcting the gait pattern, and re-activating the trunk and leg muscles.
  • Advanced period — ensuring a safe return to stairs, walking, and daily activities with strength, balance, and functional exercises.

Goals

  • Bringing pain and swelling under control
  • Restoring the knee's functional range of motion
  • Strengthening the muscles around the knee and the leg
  • Establishing a correct and safe gait pattern
  • Restoring balance and coordination
  • A safe, lasting return to daily life and function

What We Do

First, our physician assesses you, taking into account your surgeon's protocol and your state of healing, and draws up a personalized rehabilitation plan. We make it a principle to carry out every stage of the process in compliance with the surgical protocol.

In the early period, our expert physiotherapists work to bring pain and swelling under control and to preserve the knee's range of motion within safe limits. We apply gentle mobilization and clinical massage to tight muscles and support circulation and healing.

As healing progresses, we gradually restore strength, balance, and gait with fully personalized exercises. The human body is three-dimensional; therefore, we aim for functional recovery with exercises planned according to the person's needs rather than standard ones. Throughout the process we monitor our client closely and see them off safely to daily life.

Don't postpone your pain.

With the right assessment and a personalised programme, the step you take today can change your tomorrow.
