Jaw (TMJ) Joint Therapy

What Is Jaw (TMJ) Joint Therapy?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint that connects the lower jawbone to the skull and works continuously during chewing and speaking. Tension, pain and restricted movement that develop in this joint and the surrounding muscles can significantly affect daily life. Jaw joint therapy is a specialized physiotherapy approach that aims to assess and treat the muscle and joint problems in this area using hands-on techniques.

When Is It Used?

  • Jaw pain — in cases of pain in the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles.
  • Restricted mouth opening — for difficulty and catching when opening and closing the jaw.
  • Sounds and clicking in the jaw — for clicking sounds that occur during movement.
  • Teeth clenching and grinding — for muscle tension related to bruxism.
  • Head and facial pain — for referred pain from jaw-related tension.

How Is It Applied?

First, the movement of the jaw joint, the tension in the surrounding chewing muscles and the painful points are assessed in detail. The expert physiotherapist then applies soft tissue techniques, trigger point applications and gentle joint mobilization to the tight muscles around the jaw. The person is also taught specific jaw exercises and habits to be mindful of in daily life.

Benefits

  • Helps reduce pain in the jaw joint.
  • Contributes to increasing mouth opening and joint mobility.
  • Helps release tension in the chewing muscles.
  • Supports the easing of jaw-related head and facial pain.

What We Do

We assess jaw joint problems with our holistic approach that treats the head, neck and jaw region as a whole. First, our physician performs the examination and, when necessary, applies dry needling to painful trigger points. Our expert physiotherapists then provide relief by applying manual techniques and gentle mobilization to the tight muscles around the jaw. After relief is achieved, we aim for lasting recovery with personalized jaw and posture exercises, following the process remotely and sending you off with satisfaction.
