Ankylosing Spondylitis Physiotherapy

Overview

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory rheumatic disease that primarily affects the spine and the junction between the pelvis and the spine (the sacroiliac joint). Over time it can lead to inflammation, stiffness and limited movement in the joints of the spine. It usually begins at a young age and is seen more often in men.

While the medical follow-up and drug treatment of the disease are arranged by the physician, regular physiotherapy and exercise have an indispensable place in managing the disease. The aim of rehabilitation is to preserve spinal mobility, improve posture, reduce pain and keep quality of life high.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the lower back and hip region — pain that becomes pronounced especially at night and in the morning and does not ease with rest.
  • Morning stiffness — stiffness that is pronounced in the morning and eases with movement.
  • Limited spinal movement — difficulty bending, turning and stretching.
  • Impaired posture — a tendency to develop a forward-leaning posture over time.
  • Restricted chest expansion — difficulty taking deep breaths.
  • Fatigue and reduced overall desire to move.

Rehabilitation Approach

In ankylosing spondylitis, physiotherapy is built on regular exercises that preserve mobility and support posture. Stretching exercises that increase the flexibility of the spine and chest, work that strengthens the back muscles, postural exercises that improve posture, and breathing exercises that open the chest form the basis of the program. A regular, lifelong exercise habit is known to positively influence the course of the disease.

What We Do

First, our physician evaluates the person's spinal mobility, posture, flexibility and pain status in detail and sets the treatment goals. What matters to us is not the diagnosis but the person in front of us; because there is no disease, there is a patient.

Our specialist physiotherapists prepare a fully personalized program. We combine stretching exercises that increase the flexibility of the spine and chest, work that strengthens the back and trunk muscles, and postural exercises that improve posture. We use mobilization and clinical massage techniques to relax tense muscles.

We give special importance to breathing exercises that open the chest and support respiratory capacity. Through personalized, three-dimensional exercises we aim for correct body positioning and balanced strengthening, working to preserve mobility and reduce pain.

Knowing the importance of consistency in this disease, we arrange a personalized and sustainable home program and inform you about correct posture and movement habits in daily life. Through regular follow-up and check-ups we update the program according to the course of the disease, aiming to preserve your mobility and quality of life with a holistic and patient approach.

Don't postpone your pain.

With the right assessment and a personalised programme, the step you take today can change your tomorrow.
